Regeneration II: The Shard

As I said in my previous post, the primary goal of the photo-walk I did when I was last in London was to photograph The Shard. As such, this, the second image in the series, is one of my favourite images I captured of the structure. I love the soaring, clean geometric lines and the way it recalls the many church spires visible across London. I find it a very optimistic building and think it’s a great addition to the city.

One of the things I have always appreciated about London is its green spaces. Though I love cities, particularly London, I have always been happiest in the outdoors and in nature so, when I lived in London, I often found solitude in the green spaces. This duality was immediately apparent to me when I spotted The Shard through the winter-bare branches of some trees in a square. I spent some time trying to find a composition that I felt reflected the personal resonance and think this one does the trick!

Nice photo and explanation. I like the composition too, especially as the tree branches act as a kind of frame that helps push the eye into the photograph. Well spotted!

First, this is a superbly composed image, with fabulous contrasting visual elements converging harmoniously. Secondly, what a wonderful description in your caption! I couldn’t have said it any better, because I often feel the same way, finding solace in the green spaces and gardens of cities (Charleston is a perfect example). You certainly have both sides of the brain working brilliantly :^)

If the image only had branches above it would be a little clich├ęd; below and it would have interfered with the dynamics. And yet add them both together and it becomes a great composition that works exceedingly well – infinitely more than the sum of its parts.

nicely framed shot … i do like the new building …. would love to see one at sunrise with the light hitting it

  5. Nice framing with the trees!
