The Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie al Calcinaio

At this spot, some time in the 13th century, a worker in a limekiln allegedly spotted a miracle-performing image of the Blessed Virgin Mary appear on a rock wall. Folk were so impressed that they persuaded Francesco di Giorgio Martini to build his masterpiece, this wonderful example of High Renaissance architecture, on the site (it is not recorded how the owner of the limekiln felt about this). It sits on the slopes below the town of Cortona in Tuscany, Italy. Cortona itself is a very rewarding visit, made better by this wonderful church greeting you on your way up to the town, and bidding farewell on the way out.

Nicely composed, I like the details in the clouds, very nice mood.

I also have a snap of this little church which I took I think from almost the same position. If its the same church, I didn’t know and didn’t note the name of the church I pictured, I also wealked down and walked around it drawn to it as I was.
I will try to did it out and post it on my blog. I’d forgotten all about that little church. I tried to make something of the exposure but wasn’t happy with what I’d done so put it to one side but didn’t go back to it. You’ve prompted me to do just that.
    Watch this space.

The clouds and lights create a fantastic atmosphere and light.

very, very moody ….. nice bit of light over the dome

Fantastic Italian architecture and landscape, beautifully composed with the sweeping line of the road and the vertical lines of the cypresses. And the dark mood of your image with the promising light above the dome are the final master touches, the ones that make your photograph much more than a mere recording of the setting!

We’re all so used to seeing the bright Mediterranean colours of Italy, that it comes as a welcome treat to see their classical architecture re-interpreted. I love the composition in which the trees almost echo the shape of the church..
